Intensive Program in Immigration & Refugee Law

The Intensive Program in Immigration and Refugee Law exposes students to a challenging combination of a clinical placement, simulations, seminars, and supervised research work concerning contemporary issues of Canadian and international immigration/refugee law.

What You Will Do

The Program begins with one week of seminars that will introduce you to the history and international context of refugee and immigration law. This is followed by a four-week set of intensive seminars on advanced immigration and refugee law. You will benefit from exposure to various guest speakers (practitioners and academics) who will discuss selected issues of law and practice.  After you have completed the immersion in advanced immigration and refugee law, you will spend six weeks in an external clinical placement, where you will be mentored in an advocacy, institutional, or adjudicative setting.  The placement provides an excellent opportunity to deepen your knowledge of immigration and refugee law from the perspective of advocates, policy officials, and decision-makers and provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained earlier in the program.  At the end of your placement, you return to the classroom to share and discuss your placement experiences.
