Extended Time Program
Osgoode is committed to enhancing the accessibility and flexibility of the JD Program to a wide range of students. The Extended Time Program (ETP) allows students, whose life circumstances prevent them from engaging in a full-time study program, to reduce their courses to approximately half the required course load. Such circumstances would include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Family obligations such as childcare, or care of elderly, ill or disabled family members
- Temporary or long-term illness or disability
- Financial hardship
How to Apply
- Typically, incoming first-year students will apply to the ETP once they have received their offer of admission. However, applications may be received up until the start of the fall term.
- Students may also apply to enter into the program in the summers before second and third year.
- Submit a written request and supporting rationale(s) by email to the Assistant Dean, Students at mrimon@osgoode.yorku.ca

Upper-year students in the ETP will normally carry between 13-17 credit hours over two terms (a student in the regular JD program will normally carry between 13-17 credit hours in one term).
Students are allowed to enter or leave the ETP in any year level of the JD program.
ETP Fees & Financial Considerations
Please note that there may be some financial implications in entering the Extended Time Program (ETP) at Osgoode Hall Law School.
Impact on Tuition
Tuition Fees for ETP students are paid on a per-credit basis. The fee per credit for the this academic year will be posted shortly.
Impact on Bursary Amounts
Students in the Extended Time Program remain eligible for Osgoode bursary funding. The application process is the same as that for students in the full-time program. However, bursary awards for ETP students are determined based upon each ETP student’s course load and are therefore made as a percentage of the full-time entitlement.
Impact on OSAP
Your OSAP entitlement may be affected by the number of credits you are enrolled in per term. In 1L, a full course load is 36 credits and in 2L and 3L a full course load is 30 credits.
For OSAP purposes, the following qualifies you as a full-time student in 1L:
Category of student | Course load needed to apply for full-time OSAP | Course load equivalent in registered credits |
Undergraduates without a permanent disability | At least 60% course load | At least 11 credits per term |
Undergraduates with a permanent disability | At least 40% | At least 6 credits per term |
For OSAP purposes, the following qualifies you as a part-time student in 1L:
Category of student | Course load needed to apply for part-time OSAP | Course load equivalent in registered credits |
Undergraduates without a permanent disability | At least 20%-59% course load | At least 4 – 10 credits per term |
Undergraduates with a permanent disability | At least 20%-39% course load | At least 4 – 7 credits per term |

ETP Program & Career Development
All regulated recruitment periods are structured around when a candidate expects to be eligible to article. Students are eligible to article after they complete their JD degree. As the ETP allows students to complete their JD in a longer period of time, the timing of when a student will be eligible for a particular recruitment process will vary depending on the length of their plan of study.
