Setting up a Mac Laptop
Backing up Data
Before setting up a new laptop, it is recommended to backup your data for easy transfer to the new device.
- Store all files on the department shared drive or OneDrive
- Sync your browser bookmarks:
- Microsoft Edge – Sign into Microsoft Edge with your Passport York (username@yorku.ca) account to sync bookmarks
- Safari – Setup iCloud for Safari to sync bookmarks
- Firefox – Create a Firefox Account using your @osgoode.yorku.ca email address and sign-into Firefox to sync bookmarks
Creating an Apple ID Account
Before setting up a new laptop, it is recommended to create an Apple ID Account beforehand to make the setup easier. Create Your Apple ID using your @osgoode.yorku.ca email address.
Setting up the New Device
Follow the initial prompts to setup the device. When asked to use an Apple ID, sign in using the Apple ID created using your @osgoode.yorku.ca email address.
- Setting up your Browser – Sign into your preferred browser to sync your bookmarks.
- Microsoft Edge – Download Microsoft Edge and sign into it with your Passport York (username@yorku.ca) account to sync bookmarks
- Safari – Setup iCloud for Safari to sync bookmarks
- Firefox – Download Mozilla Firefox and sign into it with your @osgoode.yorku.ca Firefox account to sync bookmarks
- Setting up Microsoft 365 Apps and OneDrive – Sign into the Microsoft Office Portal (portal.office.com), click Install and More -> Install Microsoft 365 Apps
- Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts to complete the installation
- Once installed, sign into Outlook and OneDrive using your Passport York account (username@yorku.ca)
- Setting up VPN – Follow the Setup Instructions to download and configure the Ivanti Secure VPN client
- Setting up other Software
- Download Zoom and sign in using SSO

Configuring Microsoft Defender ATP
Follow these instructions to configure Microsoft Defender ATP to connect to York Information Security’s managed system. Microsoft Defender ATP is installed as part of the Microsoft 365 Apps installation completed earlier.
- Open Terminal and type Sudo
- Type sudo then drag the Microsoft_Defender_Onboarding.sh file into the Terminal window to complete the command
- Press Enter to run the command
- Type mdatp health –field org_id to verify the onboarding
