Introductory Lawyering Skills

Introductory Lawyering Skills is designed to assist students in developing ways of thinking about and resolving legal problems that will be applied both during and after law school. By the end of the course, students will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the role of stare decisis within a common law regime; find, understand, and use primary and secondary legal sources in problem-solving contexts; analyze legislation and judicial decisions; synthesize principles from multiple sources; conduct an introductory client interview; create both “predictive” and “persuasive” legal documents; conduct an oral advocacy exercise within an adjudicative setting; demonstrate a working knowledge of ways that different theoretical perspectives can shape the law; understand the limits of legal solutions; understand the applicability of a range of skills in the context of different dispute resolution processes; and grapple effectively with circumstances that give rise to ethical questions and issues of professionalism. Many of the skills covered within the course will be grounded in exposure to human rights principles and processes.
