Popovic-Montag, Suzana

Suzana Popovic-Montag is the Managing Partner of Hull & Hull LLP, one of Canada’s leading estate litigation firms. As one of the country’s premier estate litigators with over 25 years of litigation experience, she has successfully represented clients at every level of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Trained in mediation at Harvard Law School, Suzana also maintains a specialized mediation practice through Hull Estate Mediation Inc., focusing on pre-death and post-death estate resolutions.

She is a frequent blogger and podcaster and speaks regularly at conferences across Canada. Suzana is the author of numerous academic articles on estates and trusts issues – and her articles are referred to in many of Canada’s leading estates texts.

She is a co-editor of Wills & Trusts Law Reports (U.K.) and Trust Quarterly Review (U.K.). Suzana also is the author and co-author of several academic texts, most notably Probate Practice (5th Edition), Feeney’s Canadian Law of Wills (4th Edition), Challenging the Validity of Wills (2nd Edition) and Power of Attorney Litigation (2nd Edition).

Suzana has been a Lexpert Ranked lawyer since 2012 and recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada since 2009 in the area of Trust and Estates. She has also been selected as a recommended attorney by Global Law Experts.

Suzana was called to the bar in 1997. She has an LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario and an Honours B.A. in Economics and Math from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Nerland, Krista

Krista is a lawyer at Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP. Her practice focuses advancing Indigenous jurisdiction, Aboriginal rights, treaty rights and Aboriginal title through litigation. Krista has appeared at all levels of court in Ontario, and at the Supreme Court of Canada. She received J.D. at the University of Toronto, and also holds an M.A. and B.A. (Hons) from McGill. Moore, Stephen

Practiced law with Blaney McMurtry LLP for 40 years until retiring in 2022. Practice focused on serious personal injury claims including MVAs, torts committed by governmental authorities, mediation and auto regulatory issues including drafting automobile insurance policies for the gig economy. Published numerous papers in his area of practice and considered one of the leading commentators on calculating damages under Ontario’s motor vehicle tort reform legislation and its revamped framework for lessor and lessee liability for motor vehicle accidents.

Monkhouse, Andrew

Andrew Monkhouse is the founder and senior lawyer at Monkhouse Law. He has argued before the Supreme Court of Canada, all levels of the Civil Court in Ontario, and the British Columbia Supreme Court.

Andrew is a civil litigator practicing in Employment Law, Long-Term Disability, and Class Actions. He has been the lead counsel on numerous notable employment law cases, including Paquette v. Andrew acted as an intervenor at the Supreme Court of Canada for Uber Technologies v. Heller (2020 SCC 16) and Matthews v. Ocean Nutrition (2020 SCC 26).

As a pioneer in Employment Class actions, Andrew was co-counsel on the first Canadian class actions relating to employee/contractor misclassification (Sondhi v. Deloitte), variable compensation underpayment (Curtis v. Medcan), and bonus exemptions (Lee v. Allstate). Other notable class actions include those against RBC Insurance, Aviva, Approval Team, BMO, AE Hospitality, Pizza Hut, Procom, RBC Life Insurance, Solar Brokers, Spectrum Event Medical, TES Contract Services, VIB Event Staffing, Workforce, and the Ontario Government.

Andrew served as the Vice Chair and Chair of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Labour and Employment Section from 2020 to 2022, and as the Vice Chair of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Labour and Employment Section from 2023 to 2024. He was also the founding President of the Employment Lawyers Association of Ontario (ELAO).

In 2023, Andrew received an Honorary Degree in Applied Studies from Humber College for his community works.

As the managing partner of Monkhouse Law, Andrew has received numerous business awards, including being recognized as the top-growing law firm in Canada in 2019 according to the Globe and Mail. Lauwers, Peter

Called to the Bar in 1980, then engaged in private practice focussing on administrative law, civil law and constitutional law. Appointed to the Ontario Superior Court in 2008, and to the Court of Appeal in 2012.

Killey, Jean-Claude

Jean-Claude practices civil litigation and public and administrative law at Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP in Toronto. As a civil litigator he deals with a wide range of business and personal disputes, including in the specialized area of defamation. He has also spent most of his career acting as a prosecutor for regulated health profession colleges, and regularly acts in discipline hearings, judicial reviews and appeals, and other administrative law processes and proceedings.

Hull, Ian

Ian Hull, LSM is one of Canada’s leading estate litigators. He has successfully represented clients at every level of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He was the Toronto Lawyers Association Honsberger Award Winner in 2018 and received the Ontario Bar Association award for distinguished service in 2020.

His work has been recognized internationally at the highest levels. And in North America, he is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation only fellowship of exceptional trial lawyers of diverse backgrounds from the United States and Canada.

Ian was also recently inducted into the Canadian Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, whose members are amongst the most respected civil, commercial and labour Alternative Dispute Resolution professionals across Canada.

Ian regularly presents on estate law issues both in Canada and abroad. He is also the author of five books on estate law issues, including the seminal Probate Practice, now in its fifth edition. Ian is a co-editor of Feeney on Wills and has written dozens of articles.

Ian is certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a specialist in estate and trust law and civil litigation. He is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.

Ian and Jordan Atin co-founded Hull e-State Planner, a software designed to make the estate planning process simple, efficient and client friendly.

Ian was called to the bar in 1990, and co-founded Hull & Hull with his father, Rodney Hull, in 1998. He has an LL.B. from the University of Windsor and an Honours B.A. from the University of Western Ontario.

Hounsell, Al

Al Hounsell teaches in the area of legal service design, innovation and legal technology. He is an innovation director and senior lawyer responsible for leading strategic innovation, legal service design and the innovation solutions development team at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP. Mr. Hounsell works at the intersection of law and innovation, directing strategic and legal advice to clients and lawyers in matters such as: the drafting and automation of legal contracts for technology and financial services clients, A.I.-assisted due diligence, regulatory compliance management and architecture, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies in the legal tech space. Esterbauer, Nick

Nick is a Partner at Hull & Hull LLP, where he has practiced exclusively in the areas of estates, trusts, and capacity litigation for the last ten years.

Nick has experience assisting clients with matters involving all aspects of estates, trusts, and capacity law, including will challenges, dependant’s support claims, fiduciary accounting disputes, guardianship applications, life insurance disputes, international estate administration issues, unjust enrichment and trust claims, and has worked on matters heard by all levels of court in Canada.

Nick is the co-author of various papers and book chapters, a regular contributor to a number of lawyers’ association newsletters, faculty with Osgoode Professional Development’s Intensive Program in Wills and Estates, and a member of the board of directors for the Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.

Davies, Rick

Rick Davies is a Senior Director in RSM Canada’s Litigation and Valuation Services practice in Toronto, Ontario. He has been providing litigation support services to the Canadian legal community for over 12 years. Rick practices exclusively in the areas of business valuations, forensic accounting investigations, and the quantification of economic damages.

He offers a wide breadth of services, including:

  • Quantification of Economic Damages – for complex commercial litigation, including breach of contract, patent infringement, and other intellectual property disputes;
  • Forensic Accounting Investigations – for commercial and matrimonial litigation, including investor/investment fraud, procurement fraud, and the misappropriation of corporate assets;
