Osgoode Mooters Win Goodman & Carr Cup
O
sgoode's best ever competitive mooting year continued March 23 to 25 with another victory. A team of 20 Osgoode first-year students, coached by Osgoode's upper-year Gale Cup team, captured the Goodman & Carr Cup, also known as the "Baby Gale," from the University of Toronto, bringing it home to Osgoode after an absence of several years. The "Baby Gale" pits teams of Osgoode first-year students against their U of T counterparts in a mock appeal of a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision. The case was the same as that used for the Fraser Milner Casgrain Gale Cup, which this year was the Labaye decision holding that the owner of a swingers' sex club in Montreal was not guilty of keeping a common bawdy house. Osgoode swept all of the awards with the exception of one, which it split with U of T. The Goodman & Carr mooters were coached by this year's Gale Cup team of Osgoode students Geoff Grove, Will Hutcheson, Jason Reynar and Chris Tucker. The results were:

Fasken Martineau First-Year International Law Moot Court Competition Honourable Mention
Osgoode also brought home an honourable mention in the Fasken Martineau First-Year International Law Moot Court Competition, which pits Osgoode first-year students against their counterparts at the University of Toronto, Queen's University, Cornell University, Syracuse University and the State University of New York at Buffalo law school. This competition is known as the "Baby Jessup" because it is based on the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition problem, and the students were coached by the upper-year Jessup team of Christopher Montes, Paul Saguil, Zohar Levy, Ryan West and Tom Hughes. Facing stiff competition, the Osgoode team of eight first-year students put in excellent performances. Osgoode student Kalyn Bomback was one of four competitors to receive an honourable mention for her oral argument. The competition was won by the University of Toronto. Cornell University captured second place. The "Baby Jessup" team consisted of eight first-year Osgoode students: Tamara Maurer, Pavel Malysheuski, Rozina Jaffer, Tracy Lichty, Kalyn Bomback, Steven Cutler, Jameel Lalji and Sebastien Kwidzinski.
